Spalled concrete is a type of concrete that has been damaged due to wear and tear caused by weathering, chemical attack, or freezing and thawing. It often exhibits surface cracks, crumbling edges, and pockmarks.

Spalling typically occurs when water penetrates into the surface of the concrete. Each repair method should be carefully considered in order to ensure it will provide a permanently effective solution for restoring structural integrity and aesthetic appearance of the affected area.

Some measures that can be taken to avoid spall include ensuring adequate drainage around structures; sealing penetrations against water intrusion; properly repairing any visible cracks or defects in existing structures; regularly inspecting for signs of deterioration; keeping materials away from sources of moisture (such as rain or irrigation); using materials that are appropriate for their intended application (i.e., not using cement-based products outdoors); maintaining appropriate wall insulation levels; sealing joints properly with caulking material when necessary; promptly repairing any leaks found within systems or pathways leading into building interiors (such as plumbing fixtures).
