What does MTC mean in HEALTHCARE

Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a rare type of malignancy that develops in the thyroid gland, which controls hormone production and metabolism. It accounts for about 3 to 10% of all types of thyroid cancers. MTC usually originates in cells that produce calcitonin, a hormone involved in calcium metabolism.

The overall incidence rate of MTC is approximately 0.2% to 2% of all cases of cancer in the United States. It is more common among individuals who have certain inherited conditions such as multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2).

The primary treatment for MTC typically involves surgery to remove the affected parts or all of the thyroid gland followed by radioactive iodine therapy (RAI). If necessary chemotherapy or radiation therapy may also be used depending on the individual patient’s needs and medical history. Additional medications such as thyroxin replacement or glucocorticoids may also be used for management if needed.
