What does ROP mean in MEDICAL

Retinopathy of Prematurity usually occurs in babies born before 31 weeks gestation, and as premature babies have immature organs, their eyes are especially vulnerable to developing ROP. Abnormal growth of the blood vessels on the retina is caused by various factors including oxygen levels, early delivery and low birth weight.

Shortly after birth and throughout a baby's first few months, doctors will use an ophthalmoscope or other imaging technology to look into a baby's eyes and detect any signs of abnormal vessel growth.

The most common treatment for ROP involves laser therapy or cryotherapy aimed at cutting off some of the abnormal blood vessels that form around the retina before they can cause severe damage or poor vision. In some cases, medications may also be prescribed to reduce inflammation or encourage healing. Surgery is sometimes required for more advanced cases of ROP.

Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of ROP greatly reduce chances of vision loss from this condition. However, if left untreated, it can lead to partial or complete blindness. Fortunately most premature babies respond very well to treatment and many fully recover their sight with no lasting effects.

As this disorder mostly affects premature babies due to their underdeveloped organs, it cannot always be prevented entirely; however there are certain steps you can take while pregnant to reduce your baby's chances of developing this condition such as monitoring your pre-term labor signs closely and following doctor's instructions during pregnancy and labor closely.
