What does PTC mean in MEDICAL

Pseudo Tumor Cerebri (PTC) is a rare disorder that affects the pressure of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain. It can cause severe headaches, vision loss and decreased cognitive function if not treated properly.

Symptoms of PTC include severe headache, temporary or permanent vision loss, blurred vision, double vision, difficulty with balance or coordination, ringing in the ears and memory problems.

The exact cause of PTC is unknown but it is believed to be due to an imbalance between CSF production and absorption which results in increased intracranial pressure.

Treatment for PTC typically includes lifestyle changes such as reducing salt intake and avoiding activities that increase intracranial pressure such as straining during bowel movement or lifting heavy objects. Medications may also be prescribed to reduce CSF production or increase its absorption. In some cases surgery may be required to reduce intracranial pressure.

Unfortunately there is no known way to prevent PTC since the exact cause of this condition has yet to be determined. The best way to avoid developing this condition would be by maintaining a healthy lifestyle and reducing activities that may increase intracranial pressure.
