What does ASSA mean in SPORTS

The Alternative Sports Studies Allegiance (ASSSA) is an organization dedicated to advancing the knowledge and promotion of alternative sports studies. Our mission is to foster an environment where students and professionals can engage in meaningful conversations, learn from one another, and collaborate on innovative projects related to this field.

ASSSA focuses on a variety of topics within the arena of alternative sports, such as extreme sports, urban sports, indigenous games, non-Olympic sports, and more. We strive to provide a platform for research and discussion of these unique fields in order to better understand and appreciate the different ways in which people around the world experience sport.

Anyone interested in learning about or engaging in alternative sports studies can join ASSSA. Our members include students, professors, researchers, athletes, coaches, parents/guardians/caregivers who are associated with those individuals participating in alternative sports activities as well as industry professionals who work directly within these fields.

We host a variety of activities centered around alternative sports studies. These activities include lectures by experts in the field; seminars that engage dialogue about the various challenges and opportunities that come with participation in alternative sports; conferences for networking; research initiatives; online forums; workshops where members can learn new skills; and socials designed for members to mingle with each other.

Members generally meet every other month either virtually or face-to-face depending on regional regulations due to COVID-19. As part of our commitment to maintaining connection within our community we also have regular check-ins during between meetings so members can stay engaged even if travel isn't possible at any given time.

Some notable members include Olympic stars such as snowboarder Chloe Kim and halfpipe skiier David Wise who have both been active supporters of ASSSA while chasing their dreams by competing in extreme winter sports events. Additionally there are many more influencers within our community who continue to support its growth including writers like Gretchen Bleiler (Snowboarder Magazine), photographers like Chris Burkard (British Journal Of Photography), academics like Dr Haim Lurie (Harvard University) and professional athletes like X Games legend Travis Pastrana.
