What does OIC mean in UNCLASSIFIED

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is the second-largest intergovernmental organization in the world, comprising 57 member states that are primarily Muslim-majority countries. It works to promote dialogue and understanding between nations, protect human rights, promote understanding and tolerance among diverse cultures, and build partnerships to address common interests and challenges.

The primary purpose of the OIC is to foster greater unity among its 57 member states through promoting their mutual interests in political, economic, cultural, social, and security matters. It seeks to strengthen bonds of friendship and solidarity among its members while ensuring effective co-operation for their collective well-being.

The core principles of OIC include respect for sovereignty and equality among its members; commitment to peaceful resolutions of disputes; development cooperation; protection of minorities; promotion of human rights; support for democracy; preservation of cultural diversity; promotion of education and science; improvement in economic conditions worldwide; and enhancement of international peace.

The OIC contributes to global peace by promoting a culture of tolerance through dialogue among different faiths and civilisations, as well as through efforts towards disarmament and non-proliferation. It also works on strengthening international law, preventing terrorism, encouraging peaceful means for resolving conflicts or disputes between states or within states themselves.

The main organs within OIC's structure consist primarily of a General Secretariat led by Secretary General who is appointed by consensus among 57 Member States for five years renewable once every five years thereafter, along with an Executive Committee with representatives from 24 Member States that serves as its governing body which meets annually at Ministerial Level Summits. Other bodies include an Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC), an Advisory Committee on Economic Affairs (ACEJ); an International Islamic Court Of Justice (IICTJ); a Statistical Institute for Islamic Countries (SIIDC), Centre For Humanitarian Dialogue (CHD), Central Bank For Islamic Countries (CBEC) etcetera.

Membership in the Organisation can be granted to any sovereign state which subscribes to the Charter promulgated by the Summit Conference held in Rabat under article 5 thereof. All independent Arab or Muslim majority countries can become full members without restrictions while non-Arab countries or those with non-Muslim majorities may be admitted only if they satisfy certain eligibility criteria set out in article 6B thereof.

Ministerial summits usually occur once a year at various locations across member countries in order to discuss key agenda items set forth by existing Councils such as socio-economic development or strengthening partnerships between nations etcetera. These meetings provide opportunity for heads from each government delegation to review progress made on implementation plans established at previous Summit Sessions while also setting new objectives aimed at advancing collective goals.
