What Does AIA Mean
AIA stands for the Army Intelligence Agency, an arm of the US military dedicated to gathering and analyzing information related to national security, military operations, foreign policy and other defense-related topics. The AIA was established in 1987 by Congress in conjunction with the Department of Defense's Intelligence Reform initiative. As part of this new authority, the AIA was assigned responsibility for all Army intelligence activities. This includes both tactical intelligence (intelligence gathered at the operational level) and strategic intelligence (intelligence gathered from sources outside of the area of operation).
The AIA is headed by a Director who is appointed by the President with Senate approval. The director reports to both the Secretary of Defense and Chief of Staff of the Army. In addition to its headquarters in Washington DC, there are ten regional offices located throughout continental United States. Each office focuses on specific areas such as weapons research and development or political analysis.
