What does MAF mean in FOUNDATIONS

Morris Animal Foundation (MAF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the health and quality of life for companion animals and wildlife around the world. With research focused on funding studies that find solutions to serious health problems in companion animals, MAF has improved animal well-being for over 65 years.

MAF works to advance animal welfare through funding research studies that diagnose, treat, and ultimately prevent diseases in animals. By looking at health issues from a global perspective, MAF creates a future where all companions and wild animals receive exceptional care and live healthy lives.

The majority of our research projects are funded by donations from individuals, corporations, foundations and other organizations passionate about animals' well-being. We also seek out federal grants to supplement individual and corporate philanthropy.

Donations can be made through our website or mailed directly to us in one of the convenient ways listed on our donation page. We also welcome donations of appreciated stock or planned gifts which may offer desirable income tax benefits.

Besides making direct monetary donations, companies can participate in workplace giving campaigns or assist with marketing activities such as sponsoring events or product distributions. Companies may also consider creating an employee matched gift program or foundation grant program to assist in furthering our mission.

Our research focuses on the areas of cancer, infection/immune disease, kidney/urinary tract disease, behavioral medicine/animal learning & cognition, orthopedic disorders, soft tissue repair & regenerative medicine as well as others related to improving the overall health of companion animals worldwide. All studies must go through a rigorous review process before being approved for funding or selected as part of our annual Conference Grants Program with partners like American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS).

We have developed various resources including guidelines for best practices along with fact sheets covering topics like rabies vaccination schedules and guideline support documents related to canine distemper virus testing protocol so veterinary professionals can stay up-to-date on best practices when caring for patients. Yes! One way we do this is through offering Doctoral Student Scholarships enabling promising veterinary students to pursue critical companion animal field work related to infectious diseases including Lyme Disease Research Initiative Scholar Awards which works with veterinarians across multiple colleges nationwide.
