What does IDR mean in LAW & LEGAL

IDR stands for Informal Dispute Resolution. It is a method of conflict resolution that allows parties to try and resolve their conflicts without having to go through formal dispute proceedings that involve a judge or other third-party facilitators.

IDR can be used to resolve interpersonal disputes, work-related issues, consumer complaints, and many other types of conflicts.

Generally speaking, there is no cost associated with using most forms of IDR since they are informal approaches. However, if the parties require a third-party facilitator such as a mediator then there may be some costs involved depending on who provides the mediation services.

There are several benefits associated with using IDR. These include reducing legal costs by avoiding court proceedings; increased control over the outcome by allowing each side to have some influence on the resolution; increased privacy since the process will not be publically known; and increase speed in finding solutions since it does not involve lengthy court proceedings.

An attorney may recommend discussing any conflict with an attorney prior to beginning an informal dispute resolution process but generally it is not necessary unless one party wishes additional advice or support during the process itself.
