What does IDR mean in PHYSIOLOGY

IDR stands for Idiosyncratic Drug Reaction, which is one of the most unpredictable forms of side effects caused by medications.

With IDRs, it's impossible to predict how a particular person may react to a given medication. These types of reactions can range from mild discomfort to life-threatening conditions such as organ failure or death.

While the symptoms may vary depending on the type of medication in question, some common signs of an IDR include nausea, dizziness, rash, itching, abdominal pain or cramps, rapid heartbeat, difficulty sleeping or concentrating and swelling in the extremities.

While it's not possible to completely prevent IDRs from happening due to their unpredictable nature, certain measures can help reduce the risk. For example, informing your doctor about any family history of allergies or sensitivities and taking medications as directed by your physician can help limit your chances of experiencing an irregular reaction.

Treatment for an IDR depends on its severity but usually involves stopping the use of the medication and if necessary being administered short-term corticosteroids and antihistamines in order to reduce inflammation and other associated symptoms. In more severe cases hospitalization may be required along with more intensive treatment plans such as dialysis or blood transfusions.
