What does FFS mean in FARMING & AGRICULTURE

Farmer Field Schools (FFS) are an educational approach to empowering farmers and enhancing rural livelihoods. It provides farmers with the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to identify their own problems and work together to develop locally appropriate solutions.

FFS offers practical training that teaches farmers how to improve farming practices, increase productivity, manage natural resources more sustainably and adapt to climate change. Additionally, these schools provide a platform for sharing knowledge and experiences with other farmers in the community. By supporting communication between members of communities, FFS helps strengthen social networks.

Topics usually covered by FFS range from agronomic production techniques to natural resource management as well as related topics such as gender equity, health issues, food security and socio-economic development.

Typically, FFS groups consist of 10-20 farmers from a specific village or region who meet regularly over a period of 10 months. They are guided by an experienced facilitator who helps steer discussions and encourages participants to explore different perspectives, leading to collective problem solving on common issues in agriculture.

Generally speaking, anyone with an interest in learning about agricultural practices can join a FFS group without being formally educated in agriculture or having prior experience in farming activities. However each particular FFS program may have additional requirements such as language proficiency levels or literacy rates within the group that must be met for participation.

During members’ meetings there is a combination of demonstrations conducted by facilitators, field visits where participants observe real examples of different technologies or practices, discussions around topics addressed during those visits led by expert facilitators and exchanges among members themselves based on their own farming experiences.

A typical runs for 10 months over which time members meet once every two weeks for sessions lasting 3-4 hours depending on the program’s specifics.

Some programs require payment but most take into account local economic conditions when setting fees so they can be affordable even to low-income family households. Usually fees cover supplies associated with the training such as practical tools needed during sessions and demonstration materials.
