What is CTCA?

CTCA is an NGO which seeks to tackle the numerous risks posed by smoking in Africa. It works with national governments across the continent and provides expertise in taxation, policymaking, and implementation of best practices which make it easier for people to quit smoking or reduce their risk factors associated with taking up smoking. Through its work, CTCA aims to reduce death rates due to smoking-related diseases as well as disability caused by tobacco use. By working with governments on effective taxation reforms, CTCA also helps countries generate revenue from increased taxes on cigarettes, cigarillos and other forms of smokeless tobacco products.

How does CTCA Help?

CTCA's focuses on four main areas of work: policy advocacy; research; capacity building; and monitoring & evaluation. Through its policy advocacy efforts, CTCA encourages governments across Africa to put in place sound regulations that protect populations from the dangers of smoking such as plain packaging laws or higher taxes on cigarettes and cigars. Through research initiatives it funds studies which show evidence that could be used by governments when making legislation or introducing new strategies for tackling smoking. To help countries implement new strategies more effectively, it also delivers capacity building programs which provide resources for officials so they can better understand how policies are put into action at a local level. Finally, through monitoring & evaluation systems it tracks progress made towards fighting smoking – both in terms of number of people quitting or reducing their risk factors associated with taking up smoking but also compliance with existing policies – providing data that can be used going forward so that any changes made are effective in tackling this global issue.
