What does CPD mean in PHYSIOLOGY

CephaloPelvic Disproportion (CPD) is a condition that occurs during childbirth when the size of a baby's head and pelvic area are not compatible to pass through the mother's birth canal.

Risks associated with CPD can include difficulty in delivery, Cesarean section, prolonged labor, birth trauma, premature delivery and fetal distress due to lack of oxygen.

There is no treatment available for preventing or “curing" CPD as it is primarily caused by genetics and physical differences between parents. However, management options exist to address problems related to CPD such as cesarean section, forceps-assisted deliveries or vacuum extraction deliveries.

Women should seek regular perinatal care throughout their pregnancy in order to monitor fetal growth and development and identify potential issues like CPD early on. Additionally, some lifestyle changes may help manage symptoms if they occur including eating a healthy balanced diet, getting plenty of rest, avoiding activities that could harm the fetus such as smoking or alcohol consumption, and exercising regularly.

Studies have shown that though infants born with CDP have increased risk of neonatal mortality in infancy due to an increased risk of bacterial infection or respiratory distress syndrome due to premature delivery, they tend to fare well beyond infancy without any long-term developmental delays or complications if managed properly after birth.
