Cerebral Flow Index (CFI) is a medical measurement used to assess the amount of blood flowing to the brain. It is based on the average percentage of oxygen-rich blood in certain brain vessels.

CFI is measured using trans-cranial Doppler ultrasound, which uses sound waves to measure and visualise blood flow within the body's major arteries, including those that supply the brain with oxygenated blood.

CFI is mainly used to evaluate stroke patients, but it can also be used to detect abnormalities in other diseases, such as Alzheimer's Disease.

The frequency of testing depends on what condition or disease CFI testing is being done for. In general, it should be done at least once every year or two if possible, although more frequent testing may be necessary depending on individual circumstances.

Higher levels of CFI typically suggest increased cerebral perfusion and improved prognosis for recovery from stroke or neurological conditions. However, too high a level indicates an increased risk of vasospasm—the sudden narrowing of an artery due excessive dilation—which could lead to further complications.
