What does EMT mean in CONSTRUCTION

An EMT provides emergency medical care and preps patients for transport to a medical facility. They often work on ambulances, at fire stations, or in hospitals.

The amount of time required to become an EMT varies from state to state. In general, most states require completion of a basic EMT certification course which can take anywhere from four months up to one year or more depending on the level of qualifications needed.

Educational requirements vary by the level of certification desired, but candidates must typically complete courses in anatomy, physiology and emergencies involving adults, children and infants as well as pass a licensing exam. In some cases additional endorsement may be required if working in certain specialty fields such as hazardous material response or tactical medicine situations.

Having strong interpersonal skills is important when dealing with often stressful emergency situations where quick action must be taken in order to save lives. Other skills necessary include problem solving, responding quickly and calmly under pressure, being physically fit enough for the job's tasks and working well within a team setting.

Working as an EMT comes with its own set of physical risks given that the role involves handling patients who could have contagious illnesses or physical injuries that can put themselves or others at risk. That said, good training along with proper safety protocol helps ensure these risks are minimized.
