A Blown Save (BS) is when a relief pitcher enters the game with a lead, but fails to hold it and allows the opposition to score one or more runs. The pitcher who causes the run(s) to be scored is credited with blowing the save.

While there is no limit on how many times a pitcher can blow a save in any given period of time, it typically should not happen too often as this would indicate an overall lack of success in closing out games.

When a relief pitcher blows the game-winning run, they are charged with the loss and credited with allowing the winning run(s). This means their earned-run average (ERA) will suffer for that particular outing.

There are several ways for pitchers to reduce their chances of blowing saves such as knowing the opposing batters’ tendencies, developing better pitch location and sequencing, being extra aware of baserunners, throwing quality offspeed pitches, setting realistic expectations for themselves and their team and always having an aggressive mentality on the mound.

Blowing saves can have a negative impact on team morale as it not only takes away from potential wins but also imposes added pressure on other teammates trying to make up for that mistake. It can also cause frustration amongst fans if they feel those mistakes are costing their teams victory.

Yes, there is an “up by three rule” which indicates that if a team has at least three runs more than its opponent entering bottom of ninth inning or later then closer has met his job description . Therefore, if a closer lets any runs score after at least three could expect BS designation.

Relief pitchers who blow saves get credit with holds and losses along with earned runs allowed when they fail to record an out while still being charged with all three outs necessary for recording one inning pitched or recording multiple innings pitched from previous appearances. They also receive credit for all non-earned runs and walks issued during their respective outings as well as any inherited runners left on base at the conclusion of their appearances prior to giving up runs which led to BS designation.

Closers don't usually take losses due to blown saves since most times another reliever will come into replace them in order to prevent additional damage; however if that replacement fails then they will be charged with any additional earned runs and/or unearned runs scored during that particular inning regardless if they were recorded against him or prior relievers thus resulting in loss for that particular outing resulting from BS designation given prior reliever unintentionally relinquishing lead in first place before coming into game even without him actually pitching single inning before suffering defeat themselves independently.
