What does CVN mean in NURSING

To be certified as a Vascular Nurse (CVN), one must complete an accredited program which includes both didactic and clinical components. This type of certification demonstrates expertise in caring for patients with vascular diagnoses or devices.

An individual interested in becoming a Certified Vascular Nurse must complete an accredited program and pass the National Board for Certification of Vascular Nurses examination. The educational requirements for obtaining certification include completion of an approved academic program, current licensure as a registered nurse, at least two years of practice experience in vascular nursing and/or cardiovascular-thoracic surgery, 40 hours of continuing education credits every three years, and successful completion/maintenance of certification.

Some duties performed by a CVN include assessing patient risk factors associated with vascular conditions; advocating for patients regarding their care; coordinating services between different providers; performing procedural tasks related to the arterial system; providing evidence-based education; communicating changes in condition or response to therapy; and performing tests related to blood pressure, peripheral vessel flow, etc.

Collaboration between healthcare professionals is central to good patient outcomes; CVNs typically collaborate regularly with physicians such as cardiologists, radiologists and interventionalists who specialize in diagnosis, treatment or management plan evaluation for patients with vasculature disorders. Additionally, they may also work closely alongside surgeons when there is need for surgical intervention on certain vessels within the body.
