What does ACAP mean in UNCLASSIFIED

The Arctic Contaminants Action Program (ACAP) is an international program established to reduce and/or eliminate the release of hazardous substances from sources within the Arctic region, with a focus on persistent organic pollutants. ACAP works to protect human health and the environment by bringing together governments, citizens, industry, research institutions and other stakeholders at local, national and international levels.

ACAP focuses primarily on persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). ACAP also addresses heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead, as well as some non-persistent synthetic chemicals.

ACAP works through a variety of measures such as cleaner production processes in local industries; reduction or elimination of contaminated sites; promoting sustainable consumption; monitoring wildlife populations; developing new technologies for remediation; capacity building for decision makers; public awareness campaigns and education initiatives.

Since its inception in 1999, ACAP has implemented numerous action plans to reduce contaminants in the Arctic region. These have included efforts to clean up contaminated sites, develop regulations on hazardous waste disposal, support clean energy initiatives, improve air quality standards and restore fish stocks affected by pollutants.

The policies and activities associated with ACAP are implemented by regional governments, municipalities, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), Indigenous Peoples' organizations and private sector companies at both local and regional levels. A network of national focal points helps coordinate implementation efforts across countries within the Arctic region.

Decisions concerning policy implementation are made jointly between governments and other stakeholders through consensus building mechanisms such as forums or working groups open to all interested parties. This inclusive approach ensures that all voices are heard when it comes to deciding how best to address problems arising from contaminants in the Arctic region.

By reducing pollutants in the Arctic region which can be transported through air currents or oceans currents over long distances, ACAP's impacts are not limited only to this area but can extend far beyond it too — resulting in benefits for communities even outside of its immediate reach.

Everyone can help reduce their own contamination footprints by making changes at home or work like using less packaging material when possible or recycling more frequently; avoiding products or materials that contain toxic chemicals; choosing environmentally friendly products where available etc. Citizens can also take part in local ‘environmental days' where cleanups are organized or contact their representatives in government about any issues related to pollution or contamination they may observe in their area.

Significant progress has been made towards achieving many of its goals since 1999 when it was established with over 200 signed agreements on collaboration between different countries involved - this includes improving environmental conditions leading toward healthier ecosystems due largely to successful monitoring programs put into place which have identified sources of pollution more effectively while raising awareness amongst citizens regarding ways they can limit their contributions towards further deterioration of our environment.
