Types of POC

POC is available in various forms:

• Oral: Progestin-only pills (POPs) contain only progestogen and are taken daily.
• Injectable: Progestogen injections are given every 8-12 weeks.
• Implant: A small progestogen implant is inserted under the skin of the upper arm.
• Intrauterine device (IUD): A progestogen-releasing IUD is inserted into the uterus.
• Contraceptive patch: A patch containing progestogen is applied to the skin weekly.

Mechanism of Action

POC works primarily by:

• Thickening cervical mucus: Progestogen makes cervical mucus thicker and more viscous, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg.
• Inhibiting ovulation: Some forms of POC, such as implants and IUDs, can suppress ovulation, preventing the release of eggs.

Advantages of POC

Disadvantages of POC

• Irregular bleeding: POC can cause irregular or unpredictable menstrual bleeding patterns, especially during the first few months of use.

• No protection against STIs: POC does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
