What does CTO mean in HEALTHCARE

A CTO can be ordered for someone who is assessed and determined by a mental health team to have a severe mental health condition that requires ongoing treatment. It must be established that the individual does not have capacity to make decisions about their own treatment, or that they pose an immediate risk of harm to themselves or others.

Treatment plans can include medication, psychotherapy, day programs, supervised community housing and consultations with physicians. Patients may also be asked to attend group activities or mentoring sessions.

Depending on the seriousness of the illness and other factors, CTOs typically last anywhere from three months up to two years. Reviews are regularly conducted during this time period to ensure that the treatment plans are sufficient and appropriate.

Patients placed on a CTO have certain legal rights including the right to appeal any aspects of their treatment plan or proposed changes made by their healthcare team as part of their review process. Additionally, patients are entitled to access medical records during their review process as well as periodic visits for physical examinations if required by their doctor.

In cases where individuals violate the terms of their CTO, such as failing to comply with treatments or causing harm either intentionally or unintentionally, involuntary admission back into hospital for further review may be required by law enforcement officials in order for them regain control over the situation. Alternately individuals may be issued warnings or sanctions instead depending on the severity of their non-compliance issues.
