What does SUNA mean in DISEASES

SUNA, or short-lasting unilateral neuralgiform headache attacks with cranial autonomic symptoms, is a rare and debilitating primary headache disorder characterized by brief, severe, and extremely painful headaches that occur on one side of the head. These headaches are accompanied by autonomic symptoms, such as tearing, redness, and sweating.

The primary symptom of SUNA is the headache, which is typically described as severe, sharp, and stabbing pain that lasts for 5 to 240 seconds. Headaches occur multiple times per day, in clusters that can last for weeks or months. Other symptoms include tearing, redness, and sweating on the affected side of the face, as well as nasal congestion, eyelid drooping, and pupil dilation.

The exact cause of SUNA is unknown, but it is believed to be related to a dysfunction in the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for sensation and motor function in the face. Some studies have suggested that SUNA may be triggered by structural abnormalities in the hypothalamus or brainstem, but further research is needed to confirm this.

SUNA is diagnosed based on the patient's symptoms and a physical examination. The doctor may also order imaging tests, such as an MRI or CT scan, to rule out other conditions that may be causing the headaches.

Treatment for SUNA typically involves medications to relieve the pain and reduce the frequency of headaches.
