What does AVRDC mean in FARMING & AGRICULTURE

AVRDC stands for Asian Vegetable Research and Development Center. It is an international agricultural research center that aims to improve vegetable production and nutrition in Asia. It was established in 1975 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada, and Taiwan's Agricultural Research Institute (ARI).

AVRDC is funded through regular contributions from governments, international organizations, foundations, private companies, and individual donors. Additionally, the organization generates revenue by providing technical assistance to clients in the form of consulting services and training courses.

The goal of AVRDC is to promote sustainable agriculture development with focus on vegetable production supported through research related service activities - breeding, seed production seed health testing systems, agro-inputs delivery systems, among others.

AVRDC works to enhance food security in developing countries by increasing access to nutritious vegetables while protecting natural resources. They provide support through research initiatives meant to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability; promoting better access to new varieties of vegetables adapted to different environments; innovations for marketing systems; conservation of bio-diversity related to vegetable crops; strengthening seed systems; developing household gardens programs; and basic education about good nutrition for rural people.

The research activities undertaken by AVDRC includes plant breeding for adaptation to various environments such as drought or excessive rainfall conditions; post-harvest handling & value addition; integrated pest management strategies; nutritional value enhancement studies in vegetables; molecular markers identification effective in improving crop traits such as disease resistance or higher yield potential; sustainable use & conservation of genetic resources associated with vegetables & other closely related species etc.

AVRDC has been operational since October 1975, when it was first established by FAO, IDRC and ARI. In more than four decades since then it has consistently made progress towards its goal of improving food security through vegetable production enhancement efforts supported by various research initiatives across 12 member countries located primarily in Asia continent but also extending into Pacific region and Arabian Peninsula nations as well.

The headquarters of the Asian Vegetable Research & Development Center is located at Shanhua town near Tainan City in Taiwan province on Republic Of China (ROC). That said there are additional nine Regional Centers which are spread across twelve member countries in Asia – Bangladesh, Cambodia, India , Indonesia , Lao PDR , Malaysia Nepal , Pakistan , Philippines , Sri Lanka Thailand , Vietnam – where most operational activities happen under direct supervision from regional/national level liaison offices located at those respective places intended mainly for serving farming communities who depend on relevant services provided by these regional centers along with their help desk established for receiving feedback /suggestions from recipients concerning implementation of specific projects locally etc…

:AVRDC yearly conducts three main capacity building events namely ‘Asian Vegetable Symposium’ every two years exclusively focused on exchange/sharing scientific information related with vegetable improvement efforts amongst scientists/researchers/vegetable stakeholders from all over world while other two popular events conducted around same time annually are ‘AVRDC Farmer Field School’ & also ‘Southern Asian Seed Fair’ conceived towards providing empowering knowledge onto farmers regarding best practices for obtaining improved yields under given climatic conditions coupled with sharing quality seeds including certification thereof respectively …
