Benin City has been a hub of cultural and economic activity for centuries, dating all the way back to pre-colonial times when it served as a trading port for regional goods like palm oil, ivory, animal skins and spices. Throughout its long history it has been ruled by multiple dynasties including that of Oba Ewuare who established one of Africa’s earliest empires spanning much of what is now southern Nigeria from 1440-1473 CE. This dynastic period saw great advances in politics, warfare technology and architecture which can still be seen today through various traditional sites and monuments within the city itself such as the Palace of Oba Esigie which was built around 1500 CE.

Economy & Development

Today BNI serves as an important center for trade not only throughout Edo State but across Nigeria as well due to its large population base and proximity to multiple ports along both coasts. In recent years Benin City has enjoyed increased international investment with regards to infrastructure such as roads and bridges resulting in more efficient transportation services which help drive growth within the local economy. Furthermore several government institutions have been established here including two large universities – University of Benin (UNIBEN) originally founded in 1970 under military rule -and Benson Idahosa University currently serving approximately 12 000 students between them reinforcing both educational opportunities within this region along with its position on the global stage.
