What does 4EA mean in ACADEMIC & SCIENCE

The acronym E3A stands for Embodied, Embedded, Enacted, Extended, and Affective.

E3A is a theoretical perspective for HCI that considers how people interact with technology embodied in their physical environment or digital platforms. It also examines how technology has been enacted into everyday life as well as how it extends our capabilities and affectively influences our interactions.

The five fundamentals of the E3A approach include embodiment, embeddedness, enactivism, extension, and affectivity. Embodiment refers to how humans connect with technology through their physical bodies. Embeddedness is about understanding technologies’ place in society. Enactivism looks at how users adapt and value technologies in daily life practices. Extension focuses on how technology expands human cognition and communication capabilities. Affectivity considers emotion’s influence on user behavior when interacting with a device or environment.

Embodiment refers to understanding how people interact with technology through their physical bodies such as using hand gestures on a touchscreen or having full body control in virtual reality environments. It takes into consideration both perceptual processes (e.g., vision) and motor actions (e.g., movement).

Embeddedness is about understanding technologies’ place in society; contextual factors such as cultural values, norms, power structures are considered when discussing this concept within the E3A framework. Factors such as accessibility features facilitate whether or not people can access specific technological artifacts; this relates to embeddedness because one's ability to use a particular device will be dependent on its placement in the social context surrounding them.

Enactivism looks at how users adapt and value technologies in daily life practices; this includes topics like appropriation and re-appropriation of existing technologies that may have been outside of user's knowledge initially but they have taken those existing elements and added something new to make it their own set of practices (i.e., remix culture). This concept highlights user's agency and creativity when working with various technological artifacts which are then integrated into existing routines/lifestyles due to comfortability with them over time without any true external motivation from other agents involved (i.e., institutions).
