What does CHRE mean in LAW & LEGAL

The Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (CHRE) is an independent body set up by the UK government to improve the quality of healthcare standards and promote better regulation in the UK. It carries out reviews of healthcare systems and makes recommendations for improvements. CHRE also provides guidance and advice to health regulators, healthcare professionals, patients and service users, promoting transparency and accountability across all levels of the health sector.

CHRE works closely with other healthcare regulators such as the Care Quality Commission to ensure that standards are met across all areas of healthcare system. It sets out core principles of safety, quality, equality, integrity and efficiency in order to promote best practice within different sectors of the industry. CHRE also works with stakeholders on national policy initiatives including patient safety campaigns and prevention strategies.

CHRE was established jointly by the Department of Health, The Cabinet Office, Welsh Government Health Directorate and Scottish Government Health Directorate in 2005 in response to a number of issues raised about the effectiveness of regulation within England’s NHS and wider healthcare sector. It is now responsible for providing independent advice to subordinate bodies such as NICE (National Institute for Health & Care Excellence), CQC (Care Quality Commission).

CHRE has recently published its Strategic Plan which sets out its aims and objectives over the next three years. These objectives include promoting effective regulation through better stakeholder engagement; developing further guidance for regulators; making sure processes are more transparent; supporting research into greater understanding on how measures can be taken towards improving patient safety; and bringing together stakeholders from different sectors under one umbrella organisation.

Yes – CHRE conducts research into areas such as preventing avoidable harm incidents, reducing emergency care costs through better coordination between primary care providers and understanding how different methods can be used to measure performance within healthcare settings. By meaningfully engaging with stakeholders from both frontline service delivery staff as well as those in leadership roles, they hope this evidence will lead to improved patient outcomes.

The Council produces regular updates on their progress which include reports from previous meetings as well as new publications when available including strategies for improvement or information about upcoming activities or changes coming into force following consultations with stakeholders affected by new regulations. Updates are provided at least every six months or more frequently when necessary.
