What does YMV mean in COMMUNITY

Young Musicians of Virginia (YMV) is a program that provides talented and motivated young musicians up to the age of 18 with the opportunity for an advanced musical education. YMV offers world-class instruction, performance opportunities, and scholarship support.

YMV is located in Fairfax, VA, just outside of Washington, DC.

To join YMV, please submit a completed application form to our Admissions Office. We also recommend submitting audio or video recordings demonstrating your musical ability and potential.

The minimum age requirement for joining YMV is 8 years old; there is no maximum age limit. However, any student over the age of 18 must obtain approval from the Board of Directors before admission can be granted.

At YMV we offer private instruction in classical and jazz genres as well as diverse opportunities for ensemble work ranging from small combo groups to full symphony orchestras. Students may also choose elective courses in improvisation, music theory and history.

Lessons can range from once per week to three times per week depending on each student’s individual needs and goals. Private lessons typically last 30 minutes or 1 hour while ensembles usually meet twice per week for 1-2 hours each day.

We accept students with varying levels of experience playing instruments; however, we require all applicants to demonstrate their musical proficiency either through recordings or an audition prior to acceptance into our program.
