The term YEG was first coined by the founders of Youth Environment Group (YEG) as a shorthand name for their organization. Founded in 2007 by Carla Bluhm and Jonathan Dyckman-Bean, the group initially began as a grassroots effort to raise environmental awareness among Canadians aged 16-29. Since then, the group has grown significantly and today boasts over 80 members spread across 10 countries. By 2020, YEG's membership had grown to include over 12000 youths from around the world. In addition to raising awareness about environmental issues through campaigns and outreach events–the group also emphasizes youth empowerment and leadership development through its various activities such as workshops, seminars, conferences and even documentary film making. The group is committed to inspiring positive changes in young people through the power of storytelling; an approach that has enabled them to successfully reach numerous youths globally.

Youth Environment Group (YEG) is an international non-profit organization with a mission of empowering youth around the world in order to create positive change in their respective local environments. Recognizing that young voices are important agents for social transformation – YEG seeks to equip youth with tangible skills such as policy understanding or public speaking while simultaneously helping them become more informed leaders on critical global issues such as climate change or biodiversity loss. Moreover – beyond providing educational resources or furthering member knowledge—YEG’s activities also provide members with networking opportunities throughout their global network – allowing them access into political institutions or potential job prospects just within their circles alone!
