What Is XVGA?

XVGA stands for Extended Video Graphics Array; it's an enhanced version of the original VGA (Video Graphics Array) from 1987. It increased the resolution output capability of VGA with a much higher resolution, along to 640x480 pixels up to 1024x768 and even 1280 x 1024 depending upon the display hardware. This allowed for more pixels per inch (PPI) than ever before, resulting in sharper images with greater detail. The improved resolution also enabled smoother animation rendering on computer games or video clips run on computers or laptops with XVGA support.

How Does XVGA Work?

In order to understand how XVGA works, it's important to first understand how VGA works

data is stored digitally by a computer system using a series of horizontal and vertical blocks representing individual pixels which are then sent as electrical charges via RGB cables from the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) onboard graphics or sound card to the display monitor or laptop display screen. In VGA, this pixel data was sent as analog signals; however, with the introduction of XVGA technology these signals were now sent in both digital formats meaning that there were fewer errors per pixel than had been previously seen with VGA analog displays.

The improved digital format also meant that there was no longer any need for interpolation or upscaling of images which could lead to visible loss of detail when trying to show high-resolution pictures or animations such as those used with modern 3D gaming software or Blu-ray/HD movies. The result was improved visuals with smoother transitions between frames during fast motion sequences as well as better colour saturation levels due to the higher number of available colours within each pixel block resulting from 8bit colour depth rather than 6bit like before.
