History

The WUPR was proclaimed on October 18,1918 by the Western Ukrainian National Council in Lviv, a city in what is now western Ukraine. The republic lasted from November 1st, 1918 until June 22nd, 1919 when it ceased to exist after being overtaken by Poland. During this time, the WUPR had brief success in asserting its independence. It achieved recognition from several countries including Germany and Austria-Hungary. Within its borders, the WUPR governed over numerous Ukrainian cities such as Lviv and Przemysl which had previously been under Austrian control before the outbreak of World War I. The republic established various national institutions such as schools, courts and legislatures which marked a significant step towards nation building during this period of conflict-ridden transition. In January 1919 Polish forces launched an offensive against the WUPR with support from both Ukrainian nationalist factions and Soviet Russia. This struggle for power caused significant disruption and displacement for tens of thousands of Ukrainians within western Ukraine who were caught up in this territorial battle between rival forces. Although ultimately unsuccessful in achieving independence from Poland, the legacy of the WUPR lives on today within Ukraine and represents an important milestone on their journey towards shaping a unified nation.
