What is the World Trade Centre Disaster?

The World Trade Centre disaster referred to the attack on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre in New York City on September 11, 2001. Terrorists belonging to al-Qaeda attacked the towers by hijacking four passenger jets and crashing them into each of the towers. This resulted in both towers collapsing and causing a massive loss of life.

What caused the collapse of the Twin Towers?

The impact from two commercial airliners, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, flying at 500 mph (805 km/h) into the North and South Towers respectively, caused damage to their cores that then began to weaken their structural integrity. The heat generated by burning jet fuel weakened steel beams further so that they eventually succumbed to gravity and weren't able to support their weight any longer. As a result, both towers collapsed completely within an hour of being struck.

How many people were killed in World Trade Centre Disaster?
