History
The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) was founded in 1973 when Billie Jean King and other female players organized a tournament at Royal Albert Hall in London. She wanted to create a platform for top-level women’s tennis after the success of her win against Bobby Riggs the previous year. Following this victory, King began working with leading sports promoters to create a separate tour for female players, which eventually became known as the Virginia Slims Circuit. By 1975 there were 30 tournaments across four continents, and this number grew exponentially throughout the late 1970s and 1980s as interest in women’s tennis increased worldwide.
