Worcester Rugby Club was founded by William Penny Brookes who wanted to promote the sport of Rugby Union within his hometown. The club's formation began with an invitation-only event at Shrewsbury Street Hall where 14 men signed up to become members, one being Mr. Brookes himself. From then on, WRC moved places several times until it settled at Sixways Stadium in 1877 where it has remained ever since. Through these years, many prominent personalities such as Baron Stapleton, Queen Victoria’s son-in-law Lord Mountbatten and Prime Minister Tony Blair have graced the WRC grounds with their presence at various matches.
