Background

WPY stands for White Pass and Yukon Route. This was once a transportation company that provided railway service in the region between Skagway, Alaska (USA) and Whitehorse, Yukon (Canada). The company first came into existence in 1898 when three men from Seattle, Washington established the White Pass Scenic Railway Company to build a rail line to connect their city with the goldfields in Alaska. The original railway stretch operated only between Skagway and Bennett Lake, and then expanded to Whitehorse in 1900. The White Pass & Yukon Railway officially opened on July 29th, 1900.

Expansion

The company grew over time as more passengers began taking advantage of its services. It served as an essential transportation route during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1897-1898 as people from all over the world vied for a chance to make it rich in the area. With its continued success, additional land was purchased by WP&YR which allowed them to expand their operations further north into British Columbia’s interior.

Decline

By 1982, however, passenger numbers had begun to decline drastically due to competition from newer forms of transportation such as buses and aircrafts. This eventually led to financial difficulties for WP&YR which forced them to file for bankruptcy in 1982 leading to widespread closures across its lines by 1988 resulting in its eventual closure on May 17th, 1988 after 90 years of operation.

Today’s Perspective

Today, WW&YR serves as a nostalgic reminder of a time when life was simpler and rail travel was still very much alive. Despite its closure nearly three decades ago, memories still linger around WP&YR with many locals still talking about the ‘good old days’ when they would take trips along its route or simply merely just watch it go by while out hiking or camping up near one of its stops or bridges. You can even step back in time at some historic sites where both tracks still remain intact and can view various artifacts left behind by travelers along this well-traveled route such as old telegraph poles and abandoned mining equipment.
