History

In 1856, Swedish engineer Per Wikerns proposed a plan for a railway between Stockholm and Gothenburg that would link the two major cities together by rail. Construction began shortly after and took nearly three years to complete. The line was inaugurated on May 21st, 1859 with great fanfare; upon completion it had connected 500 miles of track across the country by rail. The journey between the two cities took just under 24 hours to complete at first; however this was later reduced to 12 hours with an increase in train speed over time. Throughout its history, the Wikerns-Mockelns Järnväg has seen several upgrades and expansions as technologies have advanced. In 1974, an additional stretch of track was opened between Uppsala and Linköping and further extensions were added between Uppsala and Gävle in 1990 and Karlstad-Luleå in 1995. The railway continues to be used for freight transportation today; however it also serves as an important part of Sweden's tourism industry with many train tours offered on its tracks each year.
