WKBT began broadcasting in 1953 as part of the Midwest Radio Network of stations associated with NBC affiliate KQDS-TV in Duluth, Minnesota. Over the years, the station added more programming and changed its affiliation when ABC affiliate WKOW-TV was acquired by Cap Cities Communications (now Disney/ABC) in 1961. In 1979 WKBT switched its affiliation to CBS and has been an affiliate ever since. In 1982 WKBT was purchased by Liberty Communications Inc., which split its operations into two divisions: news programming through WKBT News 8 and independent programing through Independent Station 8 (IS8). IS8 offers syndicated programs such as “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!” as well as locally produced shows like “Wisconsin Life”. In 2012 they launched a new logo featuring an all capitalized presentation of their name across various social media accounts and websites to unify their brand message.
