History

The story of Wits University began with the establishment of the Transvaal Technical Institute (TTI) in 1896. It was started with an endowment from Cecil John Rhodes and began offering courses on mining engineering and other technical subjects, such as assaying, prospecting and cyanidation process for gold extraction. The TTI later became part of the Johannesburg Technical College in 1905 which included many other subjects like chemistry, physics and architecture. After funding from Johannesburg City Council allowed expansion during 1912-1914, it was named after Dr Thomas William Worburn - Johannesburg's first professor - as The Witwatersrand Technical Institute (WTI). In 1922, after becoming part of Johannesburg's educational frame work at a tertiary level - along with Potchefstroom Agricultural College —the school officially changed its name to ‘University College of the Witwatersrand'. In 1930 it became an autonomous university following increased subsidies from government fund allocations and by 1934 there were 1 100 registered students enrolled from all over South Africa. Over time there have been various renaming events leading to what has now become one of South Africa's top universities; The University of the Witwatersrand or ‘Wits' for short.
