What does WIPD mean in STATE & LOCAL

The Western Interlake Planning District (WIPD) is a regional planning organization that delivers comprehensive land use planning, economic development, and tourism services to the residents and municipalities of Manitoba’s western lake region. The WIPD area includes the east portion of Riding Mountain National Park and to the west, Lake Manitoba/Narrows.

The WIPD provides comprehensive land use planning services such as long-term growth plans, zoning plans, building code reviews, housing assessments, and more. In addition to land-use planning services, the WIPD also provides economic development and tourism services which include grant writing assistance, business incubator programs, strategic marketing initiatives, and community consulting services.

Regional planning is an organized process by which communities in a region plan for their collective future by identifying common concerns that affect them all. It involves analyzing data on existing conditions within the region in order to identify future land uses or actions that could create a vibrant environment for current and future inhabitants. These strategies must be implemented in collaboration with local governments and other stakeholders.

Stakeholders typically include local governments such as townships, cities, villages; provincial ministries such as Agriculture & Rural Development; community organizations; educational institutions; businesses; and citizens. All these stakeholders must work together in order to develop successful plans that will benefit their respective communities.

There are multiple ways to get involved with WIPD! You can attend one of our meetings or workshops to learn about our projects or provide input into various initiatives we are working on. You can also join one of our committees - whether it’s helping us plan a special event or becoming part of a task force tackling complex issues facing our region - there’s sure to be an opportunity for you!

Yes WIPD offers grants for local businesses through its Economic Development Program. Grants vary depending on eligibility criteria set out by each program but generally include start-up costs such as rent or salaries as well as capital investments related to expansion projects.

Yes! Our team is composed of highly qualified researchers who specialize in conducting policy analyses aimed at informing decision making around key initiatives within our region. We also offer market assessment support aimed at helping new and existing businesses better understand their customer base and identify potential growth opportunities.
