History

Founded in 2009 by Directors Roberta Roth Bartlett and Maegan Woodruff, West Hawaii Dance Theatre has grown from its humble beginnings as a small community dance school in Kailua-Kona to an established professional dance company with an extensive repertoire of productions ranging from classical ballet to contemporary modern works. The company works diligently to provide dancers of all ages with the opportunity to explore their creative potential while learning important life skills such as focus, discipline, determination, and teamwork.

Instructors

WHDT's instructors are experienced professionals who have been trained at some of the top institutes around the world. From former members of New York City Ballet and Miami City Ballet to esteemed faculty members from prestigious universities such as Julliard, our instructors bring a wealth of knowledge and experience that benefit our students on both an educational and personal level. With their diverse backgrounds and inspiring teaching styles, WHDT's instructors strive to create positive learning environments where students can explore the artistry of movement while developing poise and confidence.

Classes & Programs

At West Hawaii Dance Theatre we offer classes for both recreational dancers as well as pre-professional or competitive track students in all genres including ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical/contemporary/modern, hip-hop/street jazz, musical theatre and partnering/partnering techniques (for advanced teens). We also offer summer intensives for more serious pre-professional training in ballet technique with qualified faculty members from America's leading companies.

Performance Opportunities

In addition to class instruction WHDT provides performance opportunities throughout the year on both local and international stages. These include formal concerts produced by the company itself as well as paid gigs for our advanced students throughout the Hawaiian Islands. By working together — dancers, teachers parents — WHDT creates magical production that not only inspire audiences but also give our student performers invaluable experience on stage.
