History

Joseph Uhalt was a prominent entrepreneur, with extensive business experience in the media industry when he founded WDSU in 1925. After selling a majority stake of his first radio station, WSMB in New Orleans, he purchased two surplus transmitters from KDKA in Pittsburgh and rebuilt them into what is now known as WDSU-AM 660 kHz. He knew that operating a successful station would require quality programming that would attract a wide listenership, so he started off with music shows and informational programs aimed at the local community. As his business grew, he opened up other locations throughout Southern Louisiana and expanded his broadcasting infrastructure which allowed him to reach people further out across the region. Later on he decided to add a television arm of his company which gave birth to what is now known as WDSU-TV Channel 6, one of the oldest television stations operating in America today!
