Background
WDSE was created by an act of the Minnesota House of Representatives in 1996 to provide educational programming to viewers across the state of Minnesota. The network was formed with the help of two organizations, Education Minnesota Public Television Authority (EMTPA) and University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). EMTPA provided funding for WDSE while UMD managed the station's operations. WDSE started operations on October 1st 1998 and has since served as a vital source of quality educational programming for people across all ages in the northern part of Minnesota.
