The History of WCHC

The WCHC started out as an informal organization between seven schools on the West Coast of the United States in 1972 with Oregon State University being one of them. In 1975, the Pacific-8 (Pac-8) institution adopted formal rules and regulations to govern intercollegiate play, with WCHC being officially founded and accepted into the NCAA Division I membership group. The WCHC played from 1972–1973 through to 1983–1984 before it disbanded amidst financial troubles brought about by decreased attendance due to a lack of promotion for its events and poor scheduling decisions that had split up rivalries between schools that had been traditionally pitted against each other like Oregon State versus Washington State or Oregon versus Portland State. At this point, most college teams left the WCHC for other coast conferences or left collegiate sports altogether while some competed as independent teams for several years before joining other leagues at lower divisions such as Division III or ACHA.

What Was Unique About WCHC? The unique feature of the West Coast Hockey Conference is that all members were located in three states

California, Oregon, and Washington. This allowed for interconference play between these three states which was unique in college hockey at this time period because most west coast conferences included members from multiple states such as Arizona, Nevada and even New Mexico. The league also generally consisted of smaller universities as opposed to large ones such as USC or UCLA which led to parity within the conference standings but also great underdog stories like when Chico State beat top seeded Stanford University (who had 10 returning players from their previous season’s championship team).

Conclusions

The West Coast Hockey Conference may have come and gone but its legacy lives on through alumni who still recognize and honor their alma mater’s accomplishments during those days when they were part of this remarkable group. For those unfamiliar with WCHC’s history, it serves as an example of what can be accomplished even with a small budget if you are creative enough to make your mark on collegiate sports history!
