What does BGS mean in SOCIETIES

The Bulgarian Geological Society (BGS) is a national non-governmental organization which works to promote the development of geology and related sciences in Bulgaria. It was founded in 1945 as a Public Limited Liability Company and is now one of the most influential geological organizations in the country. BGS organizes scientific conferences, seminars and meetings, publishes its own magazine “Geologica Balcanica”, carries out research projects, exchange programs with other countries, etc.

The main objectives of BGS are to encourage and coordinate interdisciplinary research in geology and related fields; to foster cooperation between scientists from different countries; to improve knowledge and skills among geological professionals; to provide an information platform for exchanging data and new ideas; to promote environmentally friendly mining practices; and to create better public awareness about geological issues.

Anyone who has an academic or professional interest in geology or related sciences can become a member of Bulgarian Geological Society by submitting an application form. This includes students, researchers, industry professionals, government officials, academics etc. Membership fees must be paid upon completion of the application process.

Bulgarian Geological Society publishes its own magazine “Geologica Balcanica” twice per year which contains articles on a variety of topics related to geology and natural resource management in Bulgaria and other countries within the Balkan region. Additionally, scientific monographs may be published from time-to-time based on individual research projects or collaborative studies carried out by members of BGS.

Every year we recognize outstanding achievements made within the field of geosciences by awarding medals – Gold Medal Georgi Kisimov (GKM), Gold Medal Two Brothers Raychev (TBRM), Silver Medal Angel Antonov (AAAM) – as well prize money during our annual award ceremony event held each October at University Of National And World Economy (UNWE). Also we have several honorary professorships granted annually based upon lifetime contributions made towards advancing science in this domain.
