Establishment of VXE

The Navy’s Antarctic Development Squadron (VXE-6) was established on April 1, 1955, by Navy Admiral Alexander Sharp. It operated out of Quonset Point Naval Air Station in Rhode Island and first deployed on an ice-breaking voyage to Antarctica in January of 1956. Since then it has undertaken countless deployments to Antarctica providing transport for personnel, supplies, and scientific equipment. Furthermore, they provided Rear Admiral George J. Dufek with a flight over the continent which allowed him to become the first person ever to set foot on the South Pole by airplane on October 31st 1956.

Operations of VXE

The squadron continued its operations over Antarctica throughout its 44 years of existence as part of Operation Deep Freeze which was conducted by both the United States Navy and the U.S Air Force. The members of VXE-6 were considered ‘ice pilots’ due to their expertise when navigating over icy surfaces such as that found surrounding parts of Antarctica While much of their work consists primarily of transporting cargo and personnel around various parts of southern continent they have also been involved in numerous rescue missions throughout their history such as rescuing an injured climber at Mt Erebus or performing extensive search operations for two missing explorers who had ventured too far into unknown territory without proper equipment or communication tools..

Demise of VXE

The disbandment of VXE-6 occurred on April 30th 1999 due largely to budget cuts from both Congress and Pentagon leadership combined with advances in satellite imagery meaning that less manpower was required down south resulting in less need for larger planes like those used by VXE crews Additionally with some its most experienced pilots becoming senior officers elsewhere there were fewer available trained individuals who could replace outgoing crew members as efficiently as before ultimately leading to its demise after 44 years service
