What Does BGDB Mean?

Black Girls Do Bike (BGDB) was founded in 2014 by two female cyclists in Minneapolis, Minnesota who wanted to create a safe space for black women and girls to explore their love for cycling. The mission of this organization is to challenge and disrupt stereotypes often associated with cycling by creating an inclusive space that celebrates unity through diversity not only within biking culture but throughout all aspects of life. With its motto being "to unite our strengths and spirit through bicycle riding," BGDB works towards empowering all individuals, regardless of gender or race, to experience the joys of bike riding.

Purpose Of BGDB

BGDB seeks to break down racial barriers as well as gender biases that exist in cycling-related activities such as races, events, bike shops and competitions by providing access and resources that promote diversity and facilitate safety among cyclists of color. Through its various programs which involve recreational rides, skill-building workshops and educational trips around cities and national parks; they have created an atmosphere where members are empowered by learning from each other’s skills while also having fun. Additionally, they aim to create an open dialogue between members so that people can talk about any issues or difficulties encountered while riding in order to provide encouragement and support for one another.
