What does VPU mean in POLICE

The VPU provides representation, legal services, education and advocacy for its members. It works to secure fair wages and working conditions for police officers in the Greater Vancouver Regional District. It also advocates for improved safety standards and greater resources for police operations.

The VPU is made up of elected representatives from specific geographic districts within its jurisdiction who serve on the Executive Board and represent their district's interests at meetings with other labor organizations, management or government agencies. These representatives are elected every two years by a majority of members within each district to serve on the board.

Any full-time or part-time sworn Constable, Sergeant or Inspector employed by a municipality policed by RCMP may become a member of the VPU by paying dues through payroll deduction or by a cheque sent directly to Union Headquarters in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The VPU addresses many issues related to policing including pay scales, equipment availability, job security provisions, training opportunities, recruitment practices as well as discipline procedures and grievances handling processes amongst others. The union also works towards providing professional development courses while promoting policies such as mental health awareness programmes among its members.

Individuals can support or get involved with the work of the VPU by contributing financially via donations made directly to Union Headquarters or through fundraising activities hosted by local chapters of support groups such as Friends of Police Officers (FOPO). They can also volunteer their time to host events like seminars which aim to promote mutual understanding between police service personnel and civilians.
