History
The first flights by Vietnamese pilots date back to the period before World War II when the French colonial administration established an Aviation School in 1933. After Vietnam declared its independence in 1945, a handful of airfields were built across the country and some aircraft were acquired from other countries. These included propeller-driven fighters such as the Morane MS 505C and MS 500AT biplanes, as well as some captured Japanese planes. Over time, more aircraft were purchased from China and Russia, with Vietnam eventually forming its own air arm in 1954. This would go on to become known as the Viet Nam People's Air Force (VPAF).
Development
In 1965, the VPAF was reorganized into three separate branches — a Flying Corps, an Engineering Corp and a Logistics Corps — with facilities being set up at various bases around Vietnam. Equipment was acquired from many different sources including China and Russia who also provided training for pilots and mechanics. During this period VPAF primarily flew fighter jets such as MiG-17s and MiG-21s which were used to defend against American bombers during Operation Rolling Thunder. In 1975, after reunification with North Vietnam, these forces were combined under one banner to form the modern Vietnamese Air Force (VNAF). The force currently operates both domestic production aircraft such as those produced by Tudic Industries combined with imports from Russia like Sukhoi Su-30MK2 jets.
Notable Contributions
Since its establishment in 1954, the VNAF has been responsible for defending Vietnamese airspace against hostile forces while also providing humanitarian aid in times of need like during floods or forest fires. The air force has not only protected its homeland but has also participated in multiple United Nation missions such as UNIKOM in Kuwait as well as supplying ground troops with aerial support during conflicts abroad like during their intervention in Cambodia between 1979—1989. In recent years they have been active participants at Hanoi International Airshow showcasing their latest equipment to regional partners and foreign observers alike.
