What does ABS mean in PLASTICS

ABS is typically produced by combining three different monomers — acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene — into an emulsion. The material is then processed using temperature, pressure or catalytic agents to induce polymerization before being cooled to form the finished product.

ABS is most commonly used in automotive parts, consumer electronics housing and other consumer products such as toys. It can also be used as an alternative to glass in windows or skylights or as protective coatings in military vehicles or aircrafts.

Generally speaking, no; however one of its component monomers - acrylonitrile - does contain trace amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). To minimize the amount VOCs released during production or post-manufacturing processes, manufacturers must follow strict guidelines when using the material.
