What BFI Means

BFI stands for Boeing Field/King County International Airport. This major regional hub services more than 3 million passengers per year, making it the second-busiest commercial airport in the state of Washington. It covers an area of over 800 acres and features two runways that are each 8,500 feet long. There are over 200 aircraft based at BFI and it serves as a base for both passenger carriers and general aviation operations. Additionally, it serves both military airlift missions and humanitarian relief operations throughout the world.

History Of BFI

The original site for Boeing Field was purchased by William E. Boeing back in 1928 as a place to fly his seaplane designs from the Seattle shipyards. From 1938 onwards, when Douglas Aircraft Company began using the site as their main production facility for commercial planes during World War II, it became known simply as "Boeing Field". Today's King County International Airport (KCIA), also known as “Boeing Field” acquired its current name after King County purchased it from The Boeing Company in 1946. Since then KCIA has become one of the busiest airports on the West Coast and is now operated by King County Department of Executive Services Aviation Division.
