What does VDRL mean in HEALTHCARE

VDRL stands for Venereal Disease Research Laboratory. It is a laboratory test used to detect the presence of antibodies in the blood against the bacterium that causes syphilis.

A positive result on a VDRL test indicates that someone has been infected with syphilis at some point in their life, even if they are no longer infected.

The Centers for Disease Control recommend routine testing for sexually active individuals, especially those who have multiple partners, or HIV-positive individuals every 3-6 months, as well as any pregnant woman regardless of sexual history. Additionally, anyone who may have been exposed to syphilis should be tested for infection immediately.

The accuracy of a VDRL test depends on how early it is performed after initial exposure to syphilis bacteria and how advanced an infection may be. Generally speaking, the accuracy rate of this test is quite high if performed soon enough after exposure or onset of symptoms. If done too late, there is a chance of false negative results due to antibodies not being detected by the test yet.
