What does VCU mean in PHYSIOLOGY

A Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCU) is a imaging test used to evaluate the bladder and urethra. It involves injecting a contrast material into the urinary system, which then shows up on x-ray images allowing doctors to view the structures in detail.

During this procedure, an X-ray technician will inject a liquid contrast dye into your urinary system. The dye helps the doctor to see any abnormalities that may be present in your bladder or urethra. The patient is asked to urinate while pictures are taken so that changes in position can be seen over time.

This test is often recommended for people with unexplained symptoms such as frequency of urination, incontinence or burning sensation while voiding. It's also recommended when there's concern about unusual findings from other tests, including ultrasound or CT scans of the kidneys and bladder.

There is very minimal risk associated with VCU as the contrast dye does not contain iodine or radiation exposure. Possible side effects from this test are an allergic reaction to the contrast dye or temporary soreness of kidneys after injection due to increased production of urine during voiding cystourethrogram. Rarely, more serious complications such as blockage in part of one kidney can occur but would require additional medical care and treatment if necessary.

Results typically take 3-5 days after the procedure has been completed however they may vary depending on availability of radiologist interpretation and complexity of case being reviewed. Results are usually communicated to patients through their primary care physician over phone or email depending on urgency or preference of receiving results.
